Birthstone and Flower for December

The gem chosen for the month of December is the Blue Topaz, and the flower is the Paperwhite narcissus, by most accounts. However, there are alternatives. The birthstone Turquoise and the flower is a white Orchid, are the other choices.

Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa line up as the big celebrations for December. For me, Christmas is premier and there is little attention to any other observance. But some of these lesser known holidays have a place within Christmas and others are part of those which focus on important or just plain fun times to celebrate!

Since it is so cold in the temperate parts of the Northern hemisphere, this month’s moon has names like “Big Winter Moon” “Cold Moon” “Long Night’s Moon”. It also marked Christmas or Yule, and was named “Aerra Geola (Month Before Yule)” and “Heilagmanoth (Holy Month)”.

Cookies, Gingerbread, and winter Pears are delicious flavors to include in your holiday cooking and baking.
